Going mad and I'm scared

Something really scary happened this afternoon. I sat down to eat some fruit and there was this male voice that sounded like my dad calling my name, as though he was angry with me for not going straight home after my appointment. I was so scared I literally froze for a few seconds, before looking round. That was when I realised that the voice was not my dad but it was coming from my head. I was even more scared then.

I'm sorry to post that here but I'm too scared to tell anyone. I really need to get it off my chest because I am so worried it's going to happen again but I can't explain it. :afraid:

Hi AGOTS, hope you're ok now. Has this happened to you before?

When I was a kid I used to hear things. Letters of the alphabet sometimes.

Auditory hallucinations are not necessarily a sign that you're going insane (though granted they're not the height of great mental health). I frequently hear / think I hear someone shout my name, enough that it startles me. Try not to dwell on it too much or it most likely will happen again; do something that involves listening, like watching TV or listening to music, to distract yourself. If it does happen again though, I can only recommend you see your GP.

Well... look on the brightside... you'll save money on phonebills.

Try not to panic... many people hear voices. It's just a fear that you have, that you will disappoint your father. Try not to let it bother you too much. Worrying about it might provoke it to happen again. If it does then talk to someone you can trust. Are you on any medication? What appointment had you just come from? Talking about it may help... keep us all updated and try not to worry about it too much. You'll be OK.

I'm sending you a PM  :hugs:
Any history of mental illness?

Everyone is saying don't worry about it, but if it was me, I'd be scared. But maybe it's because I'm half expecting it to happen one day because my family does have a big history of it.

But worst case scenario, and you are going to hear things often - there is medication for it.

Like laus said, if it's the first time it's happened i'd try and forget about it but if it happens again i'd get it checked out

You're not ill or anything are you?
Whenever I have a temperature I hear voices arguing. It's scary.
I call it my conscience.
I get voices every night. You might wanna tell your Doctor. Or, if they become a common thing, get used to them, which is what I've done.
I don't think that sort of thing happening rarely is that big a deal. I think I remember very occasionally hearing people calling my name but realising there wasn't anyone there to call me, and I considered it more of a slight trick of my hearing rather than I sign I was mad.
Hearing voices doesn't have to be scary. Some people like it: http://www.livescience.com/health/060915_hearing_voices.html

Me too. Not quite arguing, but I hear voices talking as though there's a big commotion going on.

When I was a kid I heard voices a lot even when I wasn't ill. Usually indecipherable stuff, but I could somehow get the gist of it. I hardly ever hear voices now though. Only when I’m ill or very tired.

Was it just him calling your name, you didn't hear anything else? Perhaps you had a dream about your dad and it was just a part of the dream coming back to you? Sometimes when I've had a dream that I don't remember straight away upon waking up (something to do with at what point in your sleep you dreamed that particular dream), little bits of it will come back to me later in the day - maybe that's what happened. Do you have a difficult relationship with your dad, or did you in the past? It could just be a memory suddenly popping up into your head. Don't worry, I don't think it means you're going mad! Try not to dwell on it.

If this is a one-off, don't worry about it too much, but if it happens again, go and see your GP. There are treatments for these things.

I'm not trying to belittle hearing voices, but isn't it weird how you never (or rarely) get people saying they hear things like cows mooing, or brakes screeching. Why is it only ever voices?

Because they're what's heard most. Just like you dream about the things in your life mostly, rather than cows.

Do you have a problem with cows? :p:

Doesn't sound good OP. If it repeats, go get help immediately.

Unless you like it, like that report tells us.

Wow. I thought that was just me.
Always really angry sarcy ones for me though.
