    Hi all,

I am new to TDR. I am an apprentice working for an engineering company and have recently completed my HNC in Menchanical Engineering with a grade of Distinction overall... below is the breakdown of the units:
Analytical Methods for engineers - Distinction
    Engineering Science - Merit
Business management Techniques for Engineers - Distinction
    Fluid mechanics - Merit
Project design implementation and evaluation - Distinction
    Mechanical Principles - Distinction
Application of Pneumatics & Hydraulics - Distinction
    Engineering Thermodynamics - Distinction

I would like to carry on studying and so I have been looking at OU and doing a Bachelors in engineering via Open University. I was very keen on using these grades I achieved towards my degree qualification. However, when I applied for credit transfer I was required to provide this thing called "notification of performance". having had no idea what this was, my college I did the HNC with sent me something they printed out form the Pearson/BTEC website and my credit transfer application has been returned to me because it was not in letterheaded paper of the course provider (Pearsons/BTEC). I had to do this as I have not been given my official certificate yet. I should hopefully receive the certificate soon and once I do I hope the certificate can be used, right? If I am likely to be accepted credit transfer how many modules would i be able to skip ??(I have provided the modules that I will be doing in my BEng with OU below). And I was also wondering if there is another apprentice out there like myself that has been on the same boat as I am in terms of wanting to do a degree from a HNC? This apprenticeship route is quite peculiar and it would be great to talk to someone that is doing something similar to me. Any help and direction would be very much appreciated guys, cheers.

I don't know for sure if they'd accept your credit transfer application, but I think they probably will once you have the official documents sorted out. Assuming they accept all your HNC modules then you should be able to skip Stage 1 and move directly onto Stage 2. Have a look on the Open University forum, I think there are some OU engineers in there.

Hey, thanks for your reply. I hope I get accepted too once I get my official docs. I am glad to hear that i can go to stage 2. You sound very confident about this though? is there a particular reason as to why you think i can move straight to stage 2, im just interested to know why and hope that you are right!!! If I do move to stage 2 it would save me so much time and money. Also thank you for directing me in the right way!

Stage 1 is made up of 120 OU credits, according to this page (http://www.open.ac.uk/choose/college...ilding-your-hn) a 15 credit HNC is equivalent to 120 OU credits.

The OU has compulsory modules. It's not uncommon for them to make you take the compulsory module, if they decide that the work you've covered doesn't cover the same topic. So even though you have completed 120 credits (or equivalent) you may not be able to skip all of the level 1 stuff.

If you check on the qualification page for the OU degree it will tell you what the compulsory work is. You'll be able to compare this to your own existing qualification so will know if you've covered it or not.
