University for the Creative Arts - what do you think?

What does everyone think of UCCA? (have you even heard of it??!)

Push guide (great site...) summed it up nicely:

"Still in the first throes of newlywed passion, the Surrey Institute of Art & Design (SIAD) and the Kent Institute of Art & Design teamed up in 2005 to spawn a five-campused beast going under the lengthy new married name of University College for the Creative Arts at Canterbury, Epsom, Farnham, Maidstone and Rochester. Phew. About 6,500 students are spread out across the sites, two of which (Epsom and Farnham) are based in Surrey while the others are in Kent. No prizes for guessing which Institute each used to belong to. The biggest campus is at Farnham, which houses about a third of the University College’s 6,500 students. The University College hopes to get the full University title by 2007 watch this space".

Famous ex-students!! = Linda Barker (interior designer/gurning Curry’s gimpette); Michael Dudok de Wit, Daniel Greaves (Oscar-winning animators); Tracey Emin (bonkers artist) Karen Millen, Owen Gaster, Gharani Strok (fashion designers); Suzie Templeton (BAFTA winner), Matrin Lambie Nairn (BBC two icon animator!), Emmanuel Cooper (Famous potter), Tim Searle (animator and graphics guy for have i got news for you, and behind 2DTV & I am not an animal), Adam Homes-Davies (Fine Artist),Ray Massey and Anna Fox (photography)...

'tis good:biggrin:

I went to UCCA Farnham. I started in september and promptly left. The uni library clsoes a5 8pm and is only open 4 hours on a sunday. The student accomodation there isn't al lthat bad but its really hard to get into, if you life withing 50 miles of the uni, you won't get in to halls or the student village.

In Farnham there is NOTHING. All the pubs close at 11, only the su stays open and its not an impressive SU to be honest.

Yes... I did it, lasted only first year and about 6 weeks of the second year and now I am hoping to go to UCL (interview tomorrow ). I wasn't happy there. So where shall I start....

As a university it doesn't measure up. Even though it has the title of University it is still very much an "art college" atmosphere (which is ok for some) in terms of facilities. It has a small campus and accomodation is very limited.

The student Union is terribly disorganised, we didn't have a student bar for almost the whole of my first year and when it finally opened (not a separate venue might I add, but a bar in the corner of the refectory which was converted into a "su bar"), the drinks ran out at 11. On freshers week I signed up for all these wonderful clubs and societies- break dancing, yoga, the student magazine, netball etc... and they never materialised!!! There is only one art shop on campus which is supposed to open at 9.30am but the woman who runs it rolls in at about 10-10.15 and leaves students queing up outside. If you want to buy some paint before your workshop at 10 you can forget it. Same applies to the afternoon session. Ok, so not as important as the course itself but if you want a proper university experience don't go there.

As for Fashion Promotion and Imaging.. It is supposed to be a highly regarded course amongst fashion people, especially since Victoria Beckham visited the FPI (which is what everyone at Epsom calls it) stand at Graduate Week 2007 (wooooo! ). It is good because you get to dip into lots of different disciplines in your first year in the realms of photography and styling, illustration and graphics and marketing. I went there because of the illustration side of things (when I applied it was called BA Fashion Prom. and Illustration)- the costume life drawing class they put on for us was the best day I had, really good. I ended up doing marketing. In the end, however, I just felt as though I wasn't learning anything. Although a lot of it is down to you and essentially it is a practical course, (and everyone is different) I am quite an academic sort of person, as well as creative, and I found that everything theoretical we studied was dumbed down. Like contextual studies, you'd think by the reaction of some of the students they'd been asked to donate a kidney. 2500 words?? Oh good grief!
I felt so stressed all the time, but purely by sheer volume of work and nagging from tutors, not the difficulty of the work itself. I left because I felt as though I wasn't getting anything out of university- I also ended up developing a disinterest in fashion, which I used to love.

It seems I have written an essay... sorry! Not sure if it was very helpful to you, but I hope it gives you an idea of a student's perspective, albeit a rather negative one (I'm sure many people have had positive experiences at UCCA..).
Ucca seems to be a last choice for a lot of the people I know that have applied and those that go only went cause they didnt get into central st martins etc

It was an individual one-on-one interview. We chatted about what sort of experience I had, what I did at college, then took a look at my showreel and some other portfolio stuff, it was quite relaxed and lasted about 15-20 minutes. It's good if you take some questions to ask them aswell

The student life in the Village looks amazing and who cares if the pubs shut at 11pm.. If we want student life or life in general go to London it's only like 40 miles away..
Does it do Music? If not, it's poorly named.

going in sept to do film production i here the course there is required as the best in the country alond side bournmouth, the village may lack student life but the villages are close together so you can travel very easily and get what you need as for nightlife you can go to london which is about 40-50 minutes away or guildford which is about 15min away,

i honestly can't wait!!!
I recently saw a prospectus for the Farnham campus as I have a friend who is considering applying there. From what I saw of the prospectus it looked surprisingly better than I thought. It’s definitely not as established as University of the Arts London, but more and more people seem to be aware of the UCA. From what I've read it seems to be getting mixed reviews and I think it varies from course to course.

The university as a whole has quite a small student population I believe which for some people may put them off. However it isn't that far from London. The best thing to do is to order a prospectus if you haven’t already, that may help you to decide whether it’s the uni for you. Also, most importantly listen to students perspectives.
