Ok so i'm going to be starting my Earth Sciences degree at UCL this September and I was wondering how i could get work experience or a shadow internship at BP for geoscience/chemistry. I've been interested in getting some industry experience when i can- like during the summer holidays (in the future) and i know that you generally have to be in 3rd or 4th year to get a full internship. So, i'm writing an email to BP asking about having work experience.

I just wanted to know if any of you guys had done this before/ what was it like and do you have any suggestions about what i should write in order to convince them to take me on. Thanks in advance

I did a weeks work experience with BP the summer before I started uni, I was with a group of people and we were all similar age but I'm sure they offer it to uni students too! I have a relative who works there which did help but as far as I remember they have somewhere on their website you can apply, I had to fill out quite an extensive application to do it and then email it to them.
They seem to have a week at the start of July that they take all work experience students ranging from remediation to finance, but maybe they also offer it throughout the year. I highly recommend it I loved my week there!!

Get yourself a linked in account. Add a few geo engineers in London. You should be able to search for department managers for relevant companies in London now as they will be secondary connections. If you phone the office switch and ask for those people by name, they might give you a hard time but most likely will just put you straight through.Try for the following companies.

KBR - Leatherhead Amec - Central London
    Petrofac - Woking
    Woodgroup Mustang - Woking
    ENI - Basingstoke
    CB&I - Central London
    Aker - Chiswick
    BP - Sunbury
    Jacobs - Reading
    Amec Foster Wheeler - Reading
Technip - Milton Keynes (maybe a bit far)
    Shell - Central London

    Hope that helps
