My parents want me to visit them every weekend throughout my time at uni but i dont know if ill be able to cope. Ive tried talking to them but they think im trying to cut them off. What do you guys think? Is going home every weekend reasonable?

Defo not. You need to, at least in the first weeks, be at uni to make friends. They have to respect that.

It sounds a bit excessive, how far is uni from home? I go home a lot but my uni is in the same town and even then it's only for a few hours a week/fortnight. It's all on my own accord too.

You certainly need to stay at uni for the first month so you can settle in, make friends and meet people. Going home all the time is generally a bad idea as it isolates you (lots of socialising at the weekend) and can make you homesick... it's also going to cost a lot in train fare. Why do your parents think this is normal? People I knew rarely went home except for holidays, maybe they might go for a birthday or something but not every weekend

    Controlling parents.. great

Expensive to do so if you go by train and not good for your spirits, because if you have a rough time emotionally at the start of uni and go home you will never want to go back.

    Can't stand controlling parents.

Look, you're at least 18, it's your decision what you do. Explain you'll see them every-so-often but that you have to focus on uni, making friends etc. This is your life you are trying to establish.

There's no need to do so every weekend. Just agree now and go every a couple of weeks and on the weeks you don't just give them a call, say you need to study or something and talk to them about what's going on.

Sounds too often for me. And could you afford it?

Going home every weekend if you are free is not bad in my opinion. Parents love you a lot. They always want to see you. If you can't go home because of any academic work or anything please try to understand your parents
