So I've realised I probably won't have enough work xp to become a dentist but I have enough for medicine, but the problem is I've recently decided I want to become a dentist. I know the first year for both courses are the same so my question is, is it possible to enter medicine and switch over to dentistry after a year. I really want to avoid taking a gap year

No. Apply for dentistry this year, just in case. And if need be, take a gap year.

Not to my knowledge. I think it's a much better option to get what you need and apply to dentistry, even if it takes an extra year.

Dentistry is as competitive (if not more) than medicine. From the open day talks I attended it was clear they will only really accept people who are committed to dentistry rather than be a medicine backup course. I'd imagine they have the same attitude to transfers from medicine.
