How much internet usage do universities monitor, and how closely? If you're living in halls and using a private, personally-owned device but (I assume) the only Wi-Fi access will be the uni's connection...

I read and write a LOT of fanfiction and a lot of it is of the smutty variety and I'm wondering if this is still allowed in halls. The use policy for my uni's IT does say not to use it for 'obscene or pornographic' material but I thought... surely not lol? They can't ban people from watching porn and written erotica seems like even less of a big deal.

I know this is a dumb question! I just want to check, I have anxiety and get paranoid very easily.

Yes, they can see you looking at pornographic material.

    No, they don't care.

They don't care, as long as your not running a human trafficking racket

They certainly can block/ban you from pornographic/obscene sites, and they can penalise you for breaching that agreement. My uni monitors internet use and blocks a range of 'inappropriate' sites. You sign up to a Code of Conduct for internet use when you enrol, so check the small print where you are. My uni can ultimately block your internet access from their network entirely if you repeatedly ignore warnings. I'm sure there are ways round it though.

They can see but they won't care. Why don't you just open a private browsing tab?

When I was in halls I was torrenting 24/7 and visiting "inappropriate" sites daily. It was never mentioned to me so they either didn't know or didn't care.
