Loads of vet applicants take a gap year. The best way to fund it would be to get a full time job. If you can get work at a place with animals (e.g. on a stable or as a receptionist at a vet - I know vet students that worked at both of these but they're just examples), you can kill two birds with one stone. Probably not a very vet friendly metaphor but there you go

I worked as a trainee vet nurse for a year - got paid and got tons of work exp as a result and learnt a lot of practical skills in the process. Used my annual leave to go do farm work experience such as lambing etc so I wasn't just working in a practice.
