Has anyone else done a research placement before? if so I'm mainly worried about the maths side of the research, I have never been the best at maths and I'm worried that this might cause issues. Do you require maths every day? can I look stuff up I don't know? please, has anyone got any information

Depends on what you're doing but quick maths calculations will come up regularly - think dilutions, working out how much NaCl you need for your buffer, balancing tubes etc. Try not to worry too much - apply for one and see how it goes? The maths might seem daunting to begin with, but you most likely won't be left completely on your own, especially at the start. And the postdocs or PhD students around will be able to help out and give you little tips on how to calculate things quickly.
