My friends and I have found a space, basically a wasteland and we were wondering if we're legally allowed to camp there, and if not, are the punishments harsh? I'm pretty sure the area isn't owned by anyone and I've seen people camp there before too! Any knowledge of this topic, please tell! Thank you.

In Scotland and Wales it is legal to camp on open-access land. This is generally only in national parks, marked in orange on OS maps.

In England wild camping is illegal without specific permission. Enforcement is patchy. The main problems that will get you into trouble are being too noisy or making a mess (including proper disposal of feces).

If Police come by they will just tell you to move on.
