Drinking too much?

I've got into the routine of having a glass of red wine every night before I go to bed. I share a bottle with my parents (250ml each)… I've worked out that it's about 3.2 units - over a week that's 22.4 units. The recommended allowance is 14 units a week for women… would you say this is overdoing it? Should I cut down to say 125ml or just not have wine so much?! I find it helps me to wind down at the end of the day.

Cut down on the wine - it's the number one cause of liver damage in young people. A lot of people underestimate how potent the stuff is. You are more likely to have problems drinking a small amount of wine every day than having a mad boozer once a week. And always try to have at least a couple of days a week which are totally alcohol-free. You don't need to stop drinking wine, but try not to make it EVERY night.
There's nothing wrong with a glass of wine at the end of the day. It's not like you're going out clubbing or pubbing and getting wasted every night like most college and university students.

There are people on here that are having 22.4 units a night! If you think you need to cut down then you should. :P. Personally I wouldn't say it was excessive but you know the ins and outs whereas I don't.
I wouldn't say it was too much. I know the government guidelines suggest 14 units a week, but I find I go over that pretty easily normally- one night out with about 12 units, then a couple of nights in the pub with usually about 4 each, then drinking at home too.

Dionysus - I'm sure your points are totally valid - apart from one: it's a fallacy that those who binge drink/have a mad boozer are less likely to develop liver problems. Friends of mine drink over 30 units on a mad boozer!;+ a drink or two on weekdays. Also, the liver/kidney is constantly flushing itself out and starting over. You're right though, perhaps I should cut down and/or have a couple of free nights. I like my wine though! I'm quite a small build but I'm not sure if that makes any difference to how much your body can cope with alcohol consumption?

dancingqueen - can you work out, in an average week, how many units you have? I know we shouldn't measure how much we drink by how much other people do... I'm just curious!

I'd say about 20-25.

I just don't want seemingly 'moderate' drinking to effect me, or my parents for that matter, in the long term. I mean, often men don't count the odd pint. In fact, I don't know any of my friends who actually monitor how many units they consume. They probably should!?

According to here: http://uk.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070724154738AAfJZ8f
(Not reliable, obviously)

It can lower your chances of Heart Disease by 20%. It's full of anti-oxidants and it's believed to be the reason that the French (certainly not considered Alcoholics) have the lowest incidence of Heart Disease in Europe.

So if you cut down slightly, as in not every night, it can do you some good.

Interesting... I think we justify drinking over 14 units a week if lots of other people are doing it too. Not a good sign
Seeing as red wine is a disgusting excuse for a drink, I think you should stop drinking it altogether.

People posting on yahoo seem to have a mix of opinions. The general consensus is that the poster isn't an alcoholic... but 2 glasses of wine (250ml) is not just 2 units. It depends on the strength of the wine! The wine I drink varies between 12% and 14%.

I used to think that when I was younger... Red wine has grown on me though. I wouldn't call it disgusting. It's a required taste!

Acquired even! lol
Make it into a spritzer, that way it's less units

lol, you're telling me! There was once a documentary about problem teens/20 somethings that drank too much - one girl had the chance to study at an private American school after she did a boot camp thing. She was in the year below me!

I don't understand how people can manage to drink 1, perhaps 2 bottles of wine before a night out on the town. They must have amazing tolerance levels; that plus indestructible livers!
