The group determines number of electrons on outer shell.
The period determines the number of shells.

Now just use sodium or something and compare it to another element in another group.

For example, Mg has an electronic configuration of 2,8,2. It has 3 shells and 2 electrons on the outer shell. Hence it is at group 2, period 3.
