Chemistry variables

Is it possible for an investigation not to have an independent variable? I am writing up a method for collection over water. We are keeping everything the same however we are just repeating to see the rate of reaction ( we tell by the amount of time taken for hydrogen gas to stop being produced). If this investigation does have an independent variable , please can someone help
If it doesn't have a independent variable, then its not an experiment, its just a test. Youre just testing something rather than answering a question.
