B1045 – Promissory Oaths Amendment Bill 2016, TSR Socialist Party

    Promissory Oaths Amendment Bill
A bill to introduce a new Armed Forces oath and allow oaths of loyalty to constituents for MPs.

BE IT ENACTED by The Queen’s most Excellent Majesty, by and with the advice and consent of the Commons in this present Parliament assembled, in accordance with the provisions of the Parliament Acts 1911 and 1949, and by the authority of the same, as follows:—

Section 1 - Changes to the Oath
    • Section 2 of the Promissory Oaths Act 1868 shall be amended to add a sub-section as follows:
    Alternatively a Member of Parliament may make the alternate declaration in the form follow; that is to say;

'I, , do swear...that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to the peoples of the United Kingdom, according to their respective laws and customs; preserving inviolably their civil liberties and democratic rights of self government, through their elected representatives in the House of Commons, and will faithfully and truly declare my mind and opinion on all matters that come before me without fear or favour.'

The MP may choose to either swear by Almighty God or Solemnly declare and affirm.
    • Section 2 will also have a specific oath of allegiance added for the Army Act 1955 and Air Force Act 1955:
“I, , do swear...that I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to the Government of the United Kingdom, the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Queen Elizabeth II, and to bravely defend the rights and freedom of its people."

Personnel may choose to either swear by Almighty God or Solemnly declare and affirm.

Section 2 - Short Title, Commencement and Extent
    • This Act may be referred to as the Promissory Oaths Amendment Act 2016
    • This Act will come into effect at the beginning of the next parliamentary term
    • This Act extends to the United Kingdom
    Spoiler:
    Show
Consolidates oaths into a single Act, as it allows for the Act to extend to the whole of the UK, unlike before, and introduces a new armed forces oath that clears up issues with possible army coups against the government since they swear an oath to the Queen although she is CiC the PM is de facto commander and the Ministry of Defence's importance.

This is clearly a new change rather than a reversal and introduces new content – nothing to say we can't have more than one change in a single policy area in a term.

I think the army should not be swearing allegiance to the Government but to the people of the United Kingdom. If you joined in 2005 you swore allegiance to Tony Blair's government, and since then there have been three changes.
