Hey guys, can't decide between doing Biological Science and Biomedical Science.

I think I'd like to do medical research or may even something pharmaceutical related, which would mean biomedical science would be a better option, however I'm not entirely sure that that would be my definite career, for example I may decide I actually want to become an ecologist, hence possibly choosing biological science.

    My questions are:

    1) How much harder would it be to get a job as a medical researcher with a biology degree rather than a biomed degree?

    and

    2) Is it possible to do a biomed masters with a biology degree?

    Thanks in advance.

It will depend on what options you chose in the Biological Sciences degree. If you chose lots of biomedical options, do a biomedical dissertation and try to get a biomedical work placement (which you can do with a Biological Sciences degree) then I'm pretty sure it would be enough for you to be considered for the place. If you don't chose biomedical options then it would be harder.

The only thing I will say if if you want to go into diagnostics and testing in an NHS hospital you will need to do an accredited Biomedical Sciences degree, you can't do it from a Biology degree.

Is it possible to do a biomed masters with a biology degree?
Yes, depending on the options you chose in your degree. I'm doing a Biology degree at the moment and I've chosen microbiology options, but for awhile I wanted to go into diagnostics in a hospital and my degree was accredited for this. I found a lot of universities that would accept a Biology degree on a basic Biomedical Masters. Again though it will depend what options you take and what the Masters is on.

In your position I would have a look at Biological Sciences courses and see what the modules are for any universities you would be interested in. Maybe try and go on a few open days as well and see what course you like best? If you do Biology you can still go into Biomedicine, but it will be harder so only do that if you aren't sure want you would like to do.

Thank you very much for the advice, pretty sure I'll be doing biology with physiology and microbiology modules.
