Hymenotomy

Anyone had one? Exactly what have I let myself in for?

Isn't that when they restore your hymen so you can "lose your virginity" again? I can't understand why anyone would want to do that, personally. When I was younger I just wished I didn't have one - what a pain!

EDIT: My bad, I was thinking of something else entirely

Why are you having a hymenectomy (if I may ask)?

How did you manage to get one?

Do you mean a hymenotomy by any chance? Cos I wasn't even allowed to have one of those even though I asked. They don't just randomly dole these things out on the NHS unless there's actually something seriously wrong with your hymen (and I don't just mean 'it's a bit tough and is having trouble breaking') - is it imperforate or something serious like that?

How old are you and why are you having one?

Believe it or not, I did google first and all I came up with was worst case scenarios stories that made me a bit :frown:.

My doctor has advised me to have one because I have a rare kind of hymen that's too tough to break on its own without surgical intervention.

Yes I did mean hymenotomy by the way! Bit of a typo

I'm 18. My hymen basically won't break. It's not completely imperforate but nearly so (it's got a couple of tiny holes in it rather than one big opening) and it's very thick. My GP took one look and said it'd need surgery so I'm being referred to a gynae when I get to uni.

looks like you know most the bumph.
in most the hymen is a thin membrane that often breaks partially before first intercourse - either through over stretching (dance, ballet) trauma (cycling, riding and tampon insertion). then when you first have sex its only a little bit of extra hymen left.

in some the hymen is overly thick and/or sensitive. it is formed up of scar tissue stuff rather than a membrane, meaning it might bleed like jiggery.

so all they do is inject some local anmaethetic into the area (a privelege you dont get in sex!) and then cut the hymen open following the natural lines. they often then suture it to the vaginal wall using disolvable sutures to stop it healing back up.
it can chafe a lot afterwards, so they give advice like dry those bits with a hair drier, use uber soft medicated type toilet roll for a bit etc.

but its gotta be done sooner rather than later. especially if it obstructs menstruation at all.

Ah, OK. Well, OP, can't say I've had one or known anyone who has, but good luck with it

Wow, well good luck. Look on the extremely bright side, you'll have the advantage of being anaesthetised when it breaks! Lol.

My friend had one because of a similar sort of reason and she said it was completely fine. A bit of a funny sensation afterward, but fine! Good luck!
