Okay so basically my parents really can't afford the costs etc to go down to London for 2-3 days for the tests - we live 60 miles away and that appears to be the closest test centre - can i apply for special circumstances to take the test in an examination centre closer to home?

yea you can. my friend did hers in a nearby school.
60 miles isn't that far, can't you take the train down for the day?
Go here:

Contact the SAT overseas advisor in London, make arrangements through him/her.

Something to warn you about: if you are intending to go to the US as an undergraduate, scholarships are exceedingly competitive for foreign nationals at private universities, and many US state universities do not consider awards of any kind for overseas undergraduates. Don't want you to be discouraged by this, but be aware, it has the potential for being hideously expensive. Good luck in any case.
Click on the link I posted, follow the steps- it's all there. No offense, but if your parents can't afford to go to London with you for SAT purposes, and you're not interested in financial aid, how will you make this work?

My parents and my relatives are all going to chip in. And yes, i do take offense as it is absolutely none of your business. I had a question and needed an answer, not unwanted opinionated comments.

I personally also find it irritating that certain users constantly talk about the cost of US universities. One assumes that the people asking questions can sort their finances themselves.
