18th birthday presents?

My nan is insisting she wants to get me something special for my 18th birthday. I know I'll sound ungrateful in this thread, but...oh well, haha. Well, I don't tend to like 'special' presents and to be honest I'd rather have something useful - things for university, money, whatever. But no, she's determined to buy me a necklace or ring or something. Thing is, I don't wear jewellery and I'd feel guilty about never wearing it if she bought me some expensive jewellery. The only jewellery I do wear is my plugs, but I don't really want some expensive plugs in case I stretch up again =/

So...basically, I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas of some kind of traditional 18th present that I might actually use :P

I was the same as you for my 18th, my nan bought all the grandchildren before me (all 8) something special for their 18th, I was to be no different.

I chose a plain chain bracelet that I intended to put charms on, it now has charms on it and I buy charms whenever something really significant or special happens.

I'm pretty sure my nan isn't off Dragon's Den ;D

I'd love a holiday haha, but doubt that would happen. No time to go away really. She's pretty stuck on getting a ring/necklace/bracelet/watch or something, but I never wear anything like that, never have and don't want to. I'd just feel bad for not wearing it :P

Eh, I'm just not into traditional, special presents. I'd rather have useful things off family, really.
A nice fountain pen - for taking all those college notes - and ranges in price from the very reasonable to the extortionate.

A satchel - decent leather satchel that you carry books, writing materials and/or laptop.

A brooch - something you could pin on whenever you see her.

In the end, she's your gran and even if she gives you some jewellery you may not like now, you may appreciate it in a few years' time. Your tastes will hardly remain completely unchanged over the next few years.

An ornament. My sister use to suffer this for most of her life, much to my brother and I's amusement. However, those bloody ornaments are now worth a small fortune, whilst my sweeties have been eaten
Kate.

you could always just ask for something relatively cheap so you could feel less guilty, lol.

and, are you sure your nan isn't off Dragon's Den? Because then you really wouldn't have to feel guilty anyway...

Gah, my Mum's like that too :frown:

Do you need any smart outfits? Like a suit for future interviews, or smart comfy footwear or something? Or perhaps a print of an image that means something to you?

Oh yeah, an engraved pen would be nice ! I got one from my aunty and it's quite sentimental!

I'm probably silly for not knowing this.. you said something about owning 'plugs'.. what are those??
The print idea is a lovely one...you could ask for something framed to keep and put up on your wall or whatever. I am not a jewellery person either so for my 18th people stayed away from the traditional jewellery idea. A watch? My uncle bought a really cool Paul Frank one. Someone else bought a really lovely old fashioned perfume bottle and other gave me a hand carved wooden jewellery box. My grandma bought me a pen set. Lots of special 18th birthday gifts with no jewellery in sight  At the end of the day though it isn't about jewellery you would want to wear but more something to look back on with fond memories when you are older.
Where I come from... the females in the family have always got a goat for their 18th and the males a gold plated calculator...I hope that helps
