I sent my CV but no reply - do I phone?

Hello,

I sent out my CV and cover letter to 5 places, a couple of weeks ago, asking if I could do some unpaid work experience for a few weeks.
They haven't replied. :frown:

Should I phone? I am going to extend my search to neighbouring towns now.

I was planning to say something along the lines of: Hello, My name is....., I sent you my cover letter and CV a couple of weeks ago and I was wondering whether I could do a few weeks work experience at your firm?

- basically starting asap!

What do you reckon? would something along those lines come across as rude?

It would be unpaid, so they get free labour! I have finished my 2nd year at uni and want to learn more about accountancy before I apply for grad jobs.

Any help or advice is much appreciated. Thank you

Phoning won't hurt, however I would say applying to just 5 is pushing your luck - I know some people apply to 10-20 a day on average when looking for jobs!

Lol, most companies won't bother to reply to you if they're not interested. I've sent out my CV to about 12 places, which was around a month ago and only 1 place got back to me.

I sent 5 as these were the places nearest to me. I thought I would see if I get any replies. I will phone them today, and send out loads more.

thanks

i found out i got a job today! (yay me!) after trying hard to find one since leaving college 6 weeks ago.
I sent out various cvs every day by post, checked on many job websites and sent online applications and cvs by email, looked in the local newspaper and in shop windows.
Overall i must have sent over 100 applications and in that time i had 1 letter thanking me for my application and saying they will get back to me, one interview which was unsucessful and another interview which i turned out to get the job!
Getting a job is really hard and it requires a lot of hard work. You cant be fussy about where you apply when getting your first job and have to be willing to do almost anything to gain experience.
Dont give up though. As i said ive been trying for 6 weeks and i finally got one. I didnt expect to have to wait this long until getting a full time job but thats how its turned out! Im just grateful that i now have a full time job and am able to gain experience!
