When I went on work experience I was in the theatre room thing when he was having it done (Yes he was happy for me to see)
I cant remember exactly but I am sure that they can give you something beforehand in order to make you drowsy if you know what I mean (They dont knock you out or anything)
Then the doctor will gently ease the camera tube thing through your bottom and work it up through your intestines.
The doctor was very good and talked to him throughout asking him if he was ok etc. Although slightly uncomfortable I dont really think its painful.

Ask you doctor to takl to you and reassure you throughout and you'll be fine.
I am not sure what the drink tastes lik (although I doubt it'll taste thats nice:smile:) but it definitely works on your insides. Looking at the camera when I was in the theatre the intestinal tubes pretty clear apart from the odd bit off soggy stuff lol.

All in All you'll be fine. Hope this helps a bit

I've had it done, twice I think. One of them I remember slightly, the second I was sleeping through the entire thing. I remember lying down and feeling slightly uncomfortable, I don't remember it being painful but i'm talking around 14 years ago and at the age I was, what happened might be slightly different to my memory of it.

I remember being given a drink, and being as unwell as I was, I really couldn't face drinking it. I don't remember it tasting awful, but I don't remember thinking "wow that's great!" either. I would imagine that they aren't the best tasting drinks in the world.

I'm sorry i've not been much use, I was really young when all this happened and my memories of it are pretty messed up at times. I honestly don't remember there being any pain though, uncomfortable yes, pain no. My sister in law had one around a month ago, she slept during hers too, she was given a choice, she didn't have to be awake during it and I certainly wasn't during one of mine. They will leave that up to you I suppose, I don't know the details though, it's something that you should speak to your doctor about but people are certainly given a choice.

It's over within a couple of minutes there's really nothing to it, and no need to worry. The worst part is the prep the day before, it's pretty grim! Just make sure you're nearby a toilet and you'll get through it

Having had one and assisted with a couple...

The bowel prep is horrible, there's no getting around that, as above - take a day off, stay near a toilet, drink plenty of water.

The procedure can be quite unpleasant, it depends on how easy it is to get to scope round the flexures of your colon. However, it's far better than having a gastroscopy or a top'n'tail. You can be sedated, the drug usually used has the bonus of being an amnesic - you won't remember much of what happened - this should all be explained to you before the procedure before you consent.

Good luck and take care.

Best of luck! Having observed quite a few colonoscopies, whilst they're not the most pleasant of procedures, they're by no means the worst. Chin up!

I had one 2 months ago. I was dreading it but it really wasn't that bad! Even the bowel prep things were ok, left me weak as **** but weren't actually that bad.
I was told when I went in that my hands were too delicate to sedate me, so they gave me very little, I was totally awake - if anything, the little bit they gave me woke me up lol. Think they were pissed off with all the questions I was asking while...erm...!

Good luck... but for those of us who don't ever want to do this why are you having one? How does one avoid not getting a colonscopy in their life?

thanks, well i'm not sure of all the reasons one would have one but i'm having one due to suspected collitis/crohns disease which can be genetic (i'm not sure of other causes)

i'm not sure really, other people might know though..

sorry, that wasn't much help was it?!
