I may be changing to a part time timetable to study at home as it gives me more flexibility if my principal agrees. On the days when I am not in school, does SIMS count you as present or absent?

SIMS is just a program to store attendance marks, not to automatically do them. Most likely the principal will mark you in as "Off-site education"
