What do you think of smock tops? [boys and girls

First some advice, im a size 14 and i was wondering if it would make me look fatter. I bought a really baggy one and i think it looks ok but should bigger girls wear them and can they actually pull them off without looking pregnant? I put a belt around it to stop this but what do you think?

Also in general what do you think of them. I know they are great in the summer but are they actually "hot" on girls and do you have to have a particular figure to pull them off?

They might look a bit silly on boys :s-smilie: I'm a 14 but I wear them and they look alright, is it patterned or plain?

TBH, I don't think it matters what kind of figure you have. I've yet to see a flattering smock on anyone.

I agree....they make everyone look bigger than they are, regardless of their size. Steer clear of them and buy a top that is flattering for your size.

I'm a size 16 and my mum bought me one which everyone says makes me look really slim but I still think they're unflattering

I don't understand how any top can flatter bigger girls yet make thin girls look pregnant. Ergh. Haate them.

Baggy tops are awful on everyone and make you look bigger than you are. I never wear smock tops without a waisted belt-kind of defeats the object but it gives them a shape and doesn't hide mine fully. If i buy a smocky top it normally has a tie so its fitted in the boob area and flares out nicely over my stomach. You just have to find the ones that suit you.

They're really unflattering. I really can't stand them, don't know why everyone wears them so much. My mom has about a million :P

See i always thought that they would make me look pregmant because i have big hips (size 16 trousers) but my top is anything between a 10 and 14. I went out and bought one but i always wear a belt with it. I swear i look pregnant without it. However, i like it with the belt. hmmmmm..... dont think i will buy anymore.

mine looks like this http://www.littlewoods.com/rf/navigation/product.do?Ntx=mode+matchallpartial&SNtt=smock&groupId=406761225&Nu=this_product&SNtk=littlewoods_search&Np=1&SN=103+85&Ntt=406761225&D=406761225&Ntk=group_search&Dx=mode%2Bmatchall&thisprod=404865351&N=103+85&Nty=1&Mis_item_id=15&Mis_item_loc_id=1&product=404865351
but blue patterned and a bit longer.

don't like them, don't have one. i hate this particular direction of fashion -- now i have trouble finding nice fitted tops in the shops! all I ever hear are that people are mistaken for being preggers when they wear them. a friend of mine is a model and wore one and people thought she was pregnant! your size doesn't matter, they make everyone look like they have big bellies.

and you know why i think they are in fashion? I saw lots of models wearing them, Heidi Klum for example. And you know why they were wearing them? Yes! They actually were pregnant. Lesson to be learnt - don't copy everything models wear, especially not what the pregnant ones wear (unless you're preggers yourself!)

my advice: if you plan on getting pregnant any time soon - go and buy loads of clothes now!
other wise don't.

I did actually know of some expectant mothers who were loving the smock fashion because it meant that it was a lot easier to get tops to fit over their bumps.

From what I've seen, they do have the ability to make even the most gorgeous figures look more plump, although I have noticed on one friend that it made her look really scrawny because she's naturally tiny.

It's a shame really, because some of them can look quite pretty and floaty... It's just that they seem to have the downside of adding extra tummy.

They arnt very flattering on anyone to be honest, and I think the bigger you are the worse they look.

actually let me add that they look fine with a belt - it's just when they are worn as they are that they look bad in most cases (I'm sure there are exceptions and I think i've seen a few myself, but in general not a flattering look!)
Same goes for these bloody baby doll tops and dresses. urgh. what a pregnant look! (again, some people manage to look innocent and girly and cute in them- i could never pull of that look and most people can't actually. don't know why so many who obviously look grown up try.)

I stupidly bought one without trying it on beforehand and it makes me look like I'm trying to hide a pregnancy or something! I would usually wear a belt but there's so much material that it'd look really odd at the back.

I think they look good on pretty flat chested people. In hollyoaks today, Amy was wearing the top I'm talking about and it looked much better on her :hmmm:

No-one not even a size 8 or 10 wil look good in a smock top. You'll deffo look pregnant if you're a 14. Wear a wrap top, they're slimming for bigger girls.

I think they can be okay if they're more fitted at the shoulders and bust then flare out slightly, but when they're just sleeves then loads of material they're not very nice. If they have an empire line then there's a lower chance that you'll look pregnant, you can always belt then at the waist to create this effect yourself.

They don't work for me without a belt. My boobs push the top out and then it floats somewhere a few inches away from my stomach. Like everyone else has said, i do look pregnant when i wear one.

If you must wear them, then wear them with a belt, but generally I would say AVOID at all costs. Hell, even my sis looks pregnant in them and she's only a size 10...

I don't have very much in the boob department and so I find that smock tops tend to just look like a normal t-shirt with different seams on me. I think it all depends on the type of smock top, the material it's made of and the person trying it on. I've tried some on that looked truely dreadful but I own 2 and I think they look good, other people have made comments confirming my thoughts too. I've never worn a belt over a top.
