Awwww pikachu

If your instructor's attitude is affecting your progress then ask to switch...BSM got me a female instructor for my first lessons, guess I got lucky

I requested a female instructor and shes brilliant  So so soooo nice, patient and friendly. I feel really relaxed with her. I havent had a male one to compare with but my mum learnt with 2 different male instructors then asked for a woman because she found the two men were impatient and not very nice and she just felt awful about driving. When she changed to the woman it made all the difference in the world and she passed quite quickly.

Dont worry if you think your being oversensitive - if hes not bringing out the best in you you need to change. You need to feel totally relaxed with your instructor. I was so so nervous about driving and I thought I would feel more at ease with a woman. And shes brilliant and makes me feel calm and I now enjoy driving which I didnt think would happen!

no theyre not nicer. there are some nice ones and some horrible ones. just like there are some nice and some horrible male instructors. its luck of the draw really.

I don't blame him for losing patience  I am actually awful, he didn't really lose patience that badly today but he had to do an emergency stop on a roundabout
which was fun.

I started with a female instructor. For the few lessons i felt i was learning fine, but she just kept talking continuously as we got on and i didnt seem to be going anywhere.

Switched to a male instructor, who was much more thorough and really focused which how i like learning- especially when im paying that much.

May have just been the woman i had...

Ok, I had 3 female instructors. First one was really nice, patient and encouraging. Second one was a complete hormonal whiny bitch. Third one was lovely, encouraging, patient etc etc.

Not really the same, but my examiner was female, and she was quality
She talked to me during the test, but not like too much, and joked and was just generally great (and i passed =P )

I chose a male driving instructor (first lesson on saturday :s) because I really don't get on with any of my female teachers in school and the male ones are generally more friendly. Hope it wasn't a bad idea lol.

I've only had female instructors and they've both been nice and friendly. My first one was just crackers - I drove about 20 miles away from home and back again in one 2hr lesson, before I'd even learned any maneouvres.

My current ADI is lovely, and I'm really relaxed with her. If I make a mistake, it's no big deal and I feel I'm getting my money's worth.

Awww bless ya  I'm sure you are not awful lol but even if you were then his job is to teach you to be better and to make you feel relaxed whilst doing that. Getting impatient with you is going to make you worse. Getting a female is definately worth a shot

I have a female one atm but i'm not sure on her yet, it kind of seems like she expects spot on performance v early on (i've only had two lessons where i'm actually moving in the car) but it could be just me.

I have a female instructor. She's really nice and reassures me when Im nervous. I feel really at ease with her and she answers all my questions however silly they might seem.
I've not had a male instructor so I dont really know how much different they are to females.

I had a male instructor for all my lessons and he was the loveliest, most patient person I could hope to have as an instructor. Many a time i did dangerous stuff and he just helped me out of it and then we pulled over and talked about what went wrong, but in a non patronising way. He made me laugh so much as well and used to help with my boyfriend troubles. Even now when I see him driving around with other pupils he beeps the horn and waves crazily. But yeh I agree its luck of the draw. Just depends on their personality really. I would recommend picking your instructor through talking to friends who have already passed and ringing the person (if they are independent like mine) they used.

My instructor back home was female and she was brilliant - really patient, lovely in general but not so "soft" that you didn't feel confident with her... it's hard to explain but I liked to think that if I did something wrong she would tell me straight out rather than go "urr.... yeah, that was a bit... off."
Back at uni I took a couple of lessons with BSM and had a male instructor who was also brilliant, but I'm glad I didn't learn from scratch with him. It sounds weird but I think subconsciously women have a tendancy to want to "impress" male instructors - the relationship was definitely different, not in a bad way or anything especially seeing as I'd mastered all the basics, but I'm glad I went for local female instructor to start with
That's just my experience, anyway. Of course it depends on who you're comfortable with, and what they're like!

I'd had both a male and now female instructor.

I'd say they were both the same patience wise.
But I just prefer the female for some reason  she's the best.

I had a male instructor and he was great.
Doesn't matter if they're male or female, some will be nice and others not so nice. Try to go with an insturctor your friends have recommended, that's what i did

I have a female instructor, she's great - patient, understanding, reassuring, nice; all the stuff you'd want from an instructor.

There's no reason why a bloke couldn't be all those things too though  so like what people have already said, I think whether the instructor is good or not will be more of a personality thing than a gender thing.

i had a female instructor who was great, although she was prone to looking at the guys driving cars around us and going "ooo hes fit! follow him!"

but i felt a lot more comfortable with her than i would have done with a dude, plus we had lots of girly gossips
