How far are you coming from? Because if it's a long train journey, I would not advise walking to Grey afterwards; it's tiring even if you're used to the Durham hills. The buses up the Hill are a bit rubbish though.

Anyway, the nearest place to get a bus from the train station is the bus station- go down the road leading to the station to the roundabout, go down North Road (the street with a Methodist church on one side and a Chinese restaurant on the other), and the bus station is on the right hand side of the road. You'll need to get a no. 6 bus towards Bishop Auckland. There is (stupidly) no stop for the hill colleges- your options are either to stop at the New Inn, which is at the bottom of the Hill, from which you'll need to make a short walk uphill to Grey, or to stop at the erroneously named 'South Road Colleges', from which you'll need to walk back past Butler and Collingwood to get to the back entrance to Grey. If you can't be arsed to walk up the evil steepness that is Grey drive, go to South Road Colleges, though it costs a bit more.

Anyway, hope you have a great time at Grey! It's definitely the best college

EDIT: BTW, if you do decide to walk, don't go up Hallgarth Street as the Google route arkbar posted suggest- it's much quicker to go up Church Street.

How about the park and ride to Howlands? The stop is just opposite Waitrose, at the bottom of the steps down from the station.

The Bus station at the top of North Road is about 2 mins from the train station. If you go there, get the bus 5 or 6 heading towards Bishop Aukland. It stops right outside Collingwood (which is next door to Grey). The 5 and 6 come every 15 minutes so you should be able to get one easily. If you need directions from the train station to the bus station ask at the information office, but I'm sure you'll have no problem finding it.

Good luck, hope you enjoy your time here!

Once you're at the uni (hoping you do come to Durham!) you'll see that walking from town to the hill colleges really isn't that far at all! Particularly if you have to go further than the science site for your lectures!

(Of course, if you do just spend your entire time walking that tiny path from Grey to the science site and no further, town will probably start to seem like a massive hike on the odd occassion that you want to go shopping!)

Anyway, hope you enjoyed the open day.
