STI Check Up

This may sound like a stupid question, but can you have the sti check ups done at your doctors rather than at a GUM clinic?
I can't drive, so getting to my nearest GUM clinic would be a nightmare so I would rather have the tests done at my doctors!
If I had them done at the doctors, would I get the same tests done as I would at the GUM clinic? And would it be okay just to make an appointment at the doctors and just say when I get there I want an STI check up?
Thanks

I don't know about just making an appointment and then saying what it's for when you get there, but generally your local GP surgery will only do a few of the STI tests. My village surgery does none at all, though my friend's town surgery does three.
If you want a thorough check-up you should definitely find a way to get to a proper GU clinic, as your doctors surgery will probably not run all the tests if it offers any at all.
I can't drive either, but could you maybe get around this problem by using a bus or train? Or do you have friends who can drive that you could go with?

Hope this helps and good luck

My GP surgery were happy to do a swab for chlamydia [sp?] but I had to go to the GUM clinic for the rest. Give the surgery a call, you don't have to give your name to ask whether they offer the full range of tests, and if they don't then you will have to make arrangements to go to the GUM.

My doctors did it the first time, but I tried a second time months later and they said they didn't do them any more (I got paranoid after the first!) So I'm thinking maybe doctors aren't that happy with doing them now? Can always try...

Call your GP's office and ask

your GP will just send you to your nearest STI clinic, Gps are jack of all trades and truly masters of none and most of them are too bone idle to do anything they dont have to if they can push it on to somebody else.

It may be inconvienient OP but get yourself to GUM clinic, if you dont have anything wrong you wont need to come back as GU clinics for the most part dont get you to come in for negative results

I've had it in the back of my mind for a while now that I should just get over it and get checked (again). It's scary though. I did get checked out a while ago but I skipped the blood tests, everything else was clear so that was all good, and I mean, I'm 99% sure I should be fine in terms of the things they check for in the blood (HIV/Hepatitis iirc..) but every now and then that 1% concerns me a little I suppose.

I need, for my own peace of mind, to erase it.

It wasn't a bad experience from when I remember doing it before... everyone in the waiting room is there for the same reason, after all. But I can see how it might be a hassle to actually get there if it involves taking someone else :s

Thanks for all the replies. I didn't think of giving my doctor's a call, I'll do that and see. If they don't do the tests, and I go to GUM clinic, do I need to make an appointment? Or can I just drop in?
Yeah, I'm pretty sure I'm okay, I mean I have no symptoms or anything. It's just clamydia I'm worried about, since you get no symptoms with it!

I went to the doctors and said I would like a sexual health checkup. She asked if anything had been different/unusual which it hadn't and she said she would only do a chlamydia test as there wasn't any point in doing anything else. hmmm She had these little pink packs where you do the test yourself then had it into reception and you get a text saying if you have it or not!

Depends on the clinic. But you can stay completely anonymous either way.

I rang my doctors, like people suggested but the woman I spoke to wasn't very helpful. I asked if they do sexual health check ups, and she just said "sexual health?" and I said yer, like testing for sti's and stuff. And then she just said she didn't think so! Looks like I'm going to have to go to the GUM clinic I suppose, just in case my doctors don't do the testing.

The thing is, when you get tested for STIs etc, it doesn't have to go onto your like, official records. That's probably why they setup anonymous clinics.. most people might not necessarily want to be seen in their local GPs, have it all be attached to their name, etc etc.
