    Hi,

I was just curious about whether lecturers really ask students to refer to the textbooks or whether that is just something they ask you to do just in case you need help considering they are pretty expensive. Are they really needed?

    No.

My dad got a bit overexcited when I got into university and brought my whole reading list (he works at a university so he can get textbooks at a reduced price). I can honestly say I looked at one book once and then just left them all on the side in the first year. I just found it much easier to revise online.

In the second year I did end up using one book a lot because it was really good and the final year students recommended it. My advice to you is to ask the second years what books they thought were worth buying (if any) and then just get anything you need from the library. If you find you keep getting one book out then maybe think about buying it, but it's not worth buying anything before you start

I always take stuff out the library, but you need to do it shamelessly early to avoid the rush.

I borrowed one of my classmates book and printed all the pages out via photocoppying. Worth.
