Calling all PC WORLD, CURRYS, DIXONS, AND COMET WORKERS!

Hello my fellow forum budies, I went on a hunt to search for a cheap(ish) laptop for college, and could not help but to be envy of their sales jobs!

I really want a job at any of the above stores as I have a lot of pashion for computers and other electics and thrive where ever possible to sell stuff! which would result in this being the perfect job! (for part time even though I am aware of the bad feedback in which some of you may post in this thread)

My previous experience includes:

- Burger King: 3 Months
- Primark: 7 Months
- Gap: 3 Months
- (current possition) event host at a large visitor attraction: about 1 and a half months now

and my age is 17 but for some reason or another I get confirmation letter of my application (if am lucky) and then never here back after numerous phone calls to the companies!

SO WHY IS THIS?

is is because I do not have enought experience? If so what experience would be ideal as I want to prepare myself for a christmas temp position!

EVEN THOUGH MY CURRENT POSITION IS REALLY FUN AND GOOD I JUST WANT TO WORK AT ANY OF THE ABOVE STORES AS MY CURRENT WORK WOULD TAKE ME ON STRAIGHT AWAY!

It's probably because you're 17, and hence probably don't have anything more than GCSEs, and working in places like that requires you to be fairly intelligent and mature, which you might well be but don't have the age or qualifications to show for it.

My brother is 17 and he has a permanent part-time position at Comet (though it's more like full-time over the summer). A hell of a lot of training is involved for sales which is probably why they discourage those who only want temp jobs. I'll ask him more about it if you like

I actually want a permanent post but after speaking to a member of staff, they just told be that being a temp was the easiest way to get in!

I have done my GCSE and AS levels (well hopefully, depending on results day) and with a bit of luck, I will be starting my A2's this year.

I'll ask him more about it if you like

I would really appreaciate that m8! thanks!

Well I've just been lucky enough to get a job at Dixons Tax Free. When I was looking at job sites there were always loads at Currys.Digital. Try looking at www.inretail.co.uk. You've got more experience than I have and i'm only 17 so i'm sure you can get it as long as you keep trying.

Well, I work in Comet (part-time) and in the Christmas period they hire pretty much anyone (but thats my store).

When our store re-opened and became a Destination store (huge 2 floor store) they advertised in the local papers for people to apply online (which I did). After that I had an interview, then there was a 3 week training for everyone, but the part-time staff only had to attend the 3 Saturdays.

As a Warehouse worker anyone can pretty much get hired without relevant experience in warehouse environment.

Merchandisers usually have more experience maybe in a warehouse environment or retail experience...but thats just my experience with the people from my store.

As a Sales adviser you get a lot of pressure and have to answer to a lot of people and can't get away with as much as other roles can. You can (and will) get paid more with Sales matrix bonus (bonus based on the weekly performance) but, ANYONE who works in retail for Comet can get a Team bonus based on the monthly sales targets.

If you became a Sales adviser you would get on the job training pretty much straight away and/or have to do e-learning and do such training as 'level 1 white goods, brown goods etc and DCJ (deliberate customer journey). Sales can be pretty good and fun, but if you don't meet your individual targets it can be stressful. Even worse is when a Mystery shopper comes in and rates your DCJ and the quality of the sale. I know someone who was a Christmas temp and he got 2 Mystery shoppers!! Also I know someone who worked for 5 years there and didn't get one...Anyway the guy working as a Christmas temp lets call him Jack got fired because he failed both. Jack just had bad luck and bad training by the looks of it, or just chose to ignore his training. It can be pretty picky like you can approach customers in only 2 ways! 1. "Have you found what your looking for Sir/Madam?" 2. "Is someone looking after you Sir/Madam?"

Other than that for Comet, apply online, but they won't look at it unless they have an opening and unless the store is recruiting online it doesn't seem to work. A lot of the time people come in ask for jobs and managers reply with "do it online" just to get them away. If I was you i'd say "ok may I just hand my C.V in as well" make something up like your internet is playing up.

Hope that helped.

P.S Currys and PC WORLD pay less.

For all the amount you follow me around the place and insult me, samba, I don't see you giving much help yourself, unless it's in an attempt to belittle someone. Go away.

Hardly any places have telephone interviews these days. Infact, I think the only time I've known a telephone interview is when the job involves telephone sales (so they can grasp, first hand, what your telephone manners/confidence are like etc)

Little training if any is required at DSGi (i work at currys btw), loads of students work there, they like em cus they will work for pennies, currys is now a no commision zone so expect little extra on ur basic wage and expect to be around really demotivated staff because they have lost their commission.

Still want to work there?

At my previous sales job within the same company chain i was going through applications with a colleague and there were lots like yours that were thrown away because you appear to have no commitment, you have had lots of jobs for your age and not stuck any of them out for long. Unless your reason for leaving is redundancy/store closing down etc then you may find it hard.
Yeah Currys is crap and Comet have the upper hand in the electrical retail market thats why Dixons went crap and changed to Korma Digital.

I don't know if Currys do telephone interviews..i doubt it though. Marks and Spencers are the only retail place that I have heard of that have telephone interviews.
I would not want to be served by a 17 year old, not that they sales assistants are useful anyway.
Just stick with your present job, it is fun, you are 17!!!.
