What are the pros and cons of grad schemes compared to jobs such as Accounts Assistant or Purchase Ledger Clerk whilst doing ACCA?

To be honest, in your current situation there isn't much of a difference as you are: 1) studying and 2) working.
Both will earn you experience, opportunities for promotion and allow you to continue to study to become fully chartered.

Having said that, a graduate scheme with a reputable company is likely to have structured development program and exposure to different areas whereas with the 2 roles you specified, you will probably train in a couple weeks and be stuck in that role as that is all they expect you to do.

I think the question you should ask is what training, benefits and opportunities do the companies offer as the 2 roles might prove to be better than a grad scheme or the grad scheme might prove to be better than the 2 roles.
