Ethics study the behaviour of the human beings and the criteria against which attitudes and behaviours are measured.
There are different examples of ethics:
equality: when a group of people are treated fairly without any difference of race, religion, language etc.
honesty: is very important and have many positive factors like integrity, loyalty, sincerity.
adherence to the law: respect the law is vital in the society where we living.

ethics always matter since it's how we relate to others. there are always some standards/rules for this, this is morals/ethics.
but ethics are relative. they don't exist apart from human society.
