I think they are counted as two...dont quote me on it...but I'm pretty sure.

Reply 2

Well, I'd say they count them as 2 seperate, as they are 2 seperate GCSEs.

Reply 3

If you sat an exam for one and another exam for the other, they'll be counted as two.

Reply 4

It is two, but they are two separate qualifications. Most students study for English (English Language) and English Literature. Although they are related as most schools enter students for both, you will receive a separate grade and certificate for each and will be required to write them as such when applying to University and seeking employment.

Hope this helps

Yes they r defo worth 2 GCSE's

Reply 6

I think some people only do English Language though if they are struggling, but these tend to be few and far between. Lang and Lit can be one of two subjects at A-level, but that's a different story.

Reply 7

Yep, anon's right: they're definitely worth two, because they're separate qualifications and some schools opt for their students to only take one of them (usually language). People mistake them for one because they're very closely linked in content, and are usually taught side by side. Plus schools generally don't have the time or the funds to give GCSE students separate lessons and teachers for English literature and language, whereas with separate sciences you may well receive a different teacher for Biology, Chemistry and Physics, which emphasises the fact that they're separate qualifications in a sense.

It's also worth noting that while some components of language and literature overlap (i.e. you may be able to count your coursework for both qualifications), your final grades in each of them will not necessarily be the same, unlike in double award Science where they put all of your marks together and award you one grade but count it twice- i.e. A*A* if you got 80% overall for example.

For my experience of it all, it felt like one whole subject, i was doing higher for both, but it never felt like they were two seperate subjects. we always did them with teh same teacher, yet i took a different paper for each one (a language and literature paper).

Reply 9

Well when my brother did his they were definetly counted as two seperate qualifications and I don't think anything has changed since then, that was 4 years ago.

Reply 10

It's two seperate GCSE's

Really hope i do well in Literature, I generally enjoyed Lit a lot more than language and therefore opted to take Literature instead of Language for AS Level.

Reply 11

^ I hope I did well in Lit too, although I found Language harder, Lit is x10 more interesting

Reply 12

English Language exams are so boring. :dong: English Lit are swish though.

Reply 13

It's a bit like a double science award really . . . they're taught in the same lesson, and some bits of coursework count towards both, but in the end you get two grades . . .

Reply 14

we wernt taught in the same lesson and we had different teachers
