My uni randomises based on the preferences you give (Single sex, quiet halls, ect)

different universities will attempt to 'match people' based on various things... which course, year of course, international/british, smoker, loud/quiet, clean/messy and some places will ask personality questions and interests and say they'll match based on that
in my experience it's pretty random who you end up with though aside from basics like year of course and nationality... you find lots of people request quiet flats then decide they like to party or say they're clean but can't be bothered once mum's not doing most of it for them and they aren't really going to take into account the interests etc of thousands of students
