They generally learn to prioritise. Yes there are times when you can let your hair down, and you tend to make space for big events. But when a deadline is due, then you tend to make work a priority. It also depends what you want from a social life as well.

If people in medicine and sciences with packed timetables can do it...

Party hard, study harder!

Sleep hardest.

Medics and lawyers seem to do it the most.

wierdly enough, my motto at uni was: "study hard, play harder". it worked 100% and kept me motivated.

Ditto - that's how I get through it. Then around exam/deadline season, study very hard and party so hard after it's all over!

Yeah I have to make a conscious effort to actually study

i dont think its a case of working hard, its more just working in the first place. I did very little actual work in college. im thinking doing 6-8 hours a day of work should be more than enough. If i get up at 10-11 each day and work to about 6, i'll have each evening off. As people have pointed out, there will obviously be times where you write off a day to play sport or cram when you're behind on some work.

I was on quite a demanding course hours-wise, bu found if I got on with the work, a night out/pub trip/cinema/meal out/party was an excellent motivator to start concetrating and stop faffing about on the internet!

I choose to do all my work until 5pm, then have free time after 5.
The fact is; most assignments don't take that long to do - even though they seem to when you're rushing them for a deadline, like a number of my friends do. I find it easier to do an hour or two a day for a week or two, job done, then the evenings are mine.

The nature of my course is quite social, I'm planning on working hard and partying hard until I get run down and have to prioritse.

It is possible, the damage to my liver and my first class honours degree are tribute to it.

mate don't worry, you're doing history at oxford. My mate who does that gets away with about 8 hours a week, never mind a day..

i want to try and at least make a reasonable stab at getting a first in prelims though. (if i get the A level results to actually get there that is)

I so know im going to get corruped by friends and become mildly alcoholic or whatever though. All these hardship funds im apparently entitled to are just going to supply endless beer money given i dont really buy many things generally.

routine my friends routine.

get into getting up at a set time each day, say 10am, earlier if you have lectures at 9 of course. its important you develop boundaries, weekends (or at least saturday) is off limits. evenings too if possible. What I liked to do is break the back of any work during the day, go home watch neighbours, eat, hollyoaks, then do casual reading for the next days lecture.

Do the work/reading for one module after the lecture seminar, I wish I did this more! you're head is brimming full of ideas and new information you're really in the zone to tackle the topic. I would (looking back!) use this time to write up your class notes neatly and add in extra info that you forgot at the time/have thought of since. perhaps type it up onto computer, make a page of precise notes, excellent for revision. (stick in websites/books which are good onto it for exam time too!)

Work in the library, too many distractions in halls/house, computer, friends not working, music etc.

all this 8 hour working days is nonsense, you're unlikely to cope with that, you can easily do 4-5 hours of solid work in the library everyday and be in a fantastic position. Hell I hardly did any work at all and managed ok. if you work 8 hour days you're unwilling to want to go out and drink/go clubbing. do it like that its not a intensive workload but a cruise.

or you can do a MattG, where your level of work went down year by year, revise the day before for your final exams, do all nighters for almost every essay...and come out with a 2:1

Are they both possible?

How do people in higher education prioritise studying, working and partying?

I want to come out with top grades but dont want my social life to suffer

At Oxford we have a saying: You can work hard, play hard, and sleep... but nobody ever does more than 2. Yes it's possible, but the key is being organised. Get yourself a diary, plan, and stick to your plans. Obviously the amount of work varies by uni - but I reckon I can probably say quite categorically that I have more than you will  If you can chain yourself to a desk 9-5 (which I've never had to do, but then I do have labs) then you will be more than capable of taking every night off to party. Although it might be worth only partying hard once a week, and easing off a bit on the other nights so you're not totally hungover while trying to work!
