Human's have no doubt had an effect, and CO2 levels have increased drastically. Whether the current ice levels in the arctic are part of the natural cycle, it is difficult to say. We are technically still in an interglacial period which tends to last up to 20,000 years, and the last ice age ended around 12,000 years ago, so we should still have a few more thousand years. It is not unusual for the ice caps to melt for brief amounts of time during the interglacial period. However, once the interglacial period comes to the end, the general trend over the next 100,000 years should involve a slow growth in the ice caps until the next ice age occurs. If that doesn't happen, then we have truly altered the natural cycle.

This might be a stupid question, but surely if it's at its second lowest level, it's grown since that last measurement?
