    Why did India divide?

    To cut a long story short, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, leader of the All India Muslim League wanted a separate state for Muslims as he, along with a large portion of the Islamic community felt that Muslims would get the short end of the stick in Independent India as the Congress was Hindu dominated.

    While Gandhi wanted India to remain united there were many who disagreed with him, Hindus and Muslims alike. There was also a lot of communal violence between Hindus and Muslims during the time.

    There were a lot more complexities but this it in a nutshell.
