If you get a first in moderations, does that automatically make you a scholar, or could you be an exhibitioner? What is the difference? I have heard that scholars get to wear a scholar's gown, but exhibitioner's might or might not.

Generally speaking yes, although I think colleges technically have some discretion. Exhibitions are just down to discretion. I wouldn't worry about it too much. Scholarships and exhibitions aren't that important and both can wear scholars gowns ---> Like this .
well, the way they do it at Merton is that if you get a first in Mods/Prelims you're an exhibitioner (£40-odd a term, and you get to wear a scholar's gown).
Then, if you keep doing well, you might be bumped up to scholar (actually it's called postmaster at Merton, but it's the same thing), and you get £66 or so per term. If you are doing something like English, you might be made exhibitioner even without a first in prelims, if you work to a high 2:1 standard consistently.

Ooh, that answers a lot of questions. A person I know got the highest double first in Oxford in his subject and was only an exhibitioner after his first year (confusing me somewhat).

Is this just Merton trying to save money due to the large number of people that receive Firsts in Mods/Prelims or is this some weird Mertonian tradition dating back a few centuries like the time ceremoney?

It varies from college to college. At ChCh, you need a first in Prelims or Mods to be a scholar, but exhibitions can be given out to those they consider to have worked hard or to those who just missed a first. It also varies from subject to subject, depending on the generosity or stinginess of the tutors.

In my year there were no exhibitioners for my langs, despite some very near misses on distinctions in Prelims. Totally at the whims of the powers that be.

You can also have your scholarship or exhibition removed if you don't work hard enough. That happened to a friend of mine at another college. So beware...

I know of at least one person at Chch who got a 2:1 and still got a scholarship, so it's not that strict a rule that you need a first.

True about ChCh - it's often different for Classics Mods, for example. But for the most part, the first thing still stands. In Mod Langs it was certainly true.
