AOL uses some kind of emulation at the PC end and dosn't use TCP/IP in the same way normal ISPs do. AOL is basicaly a demostic mickey mouse cowboy ISP.

Haha

"for those who don't know better"

I wish I can remember the protocol its based on, its some IBM from the 1960's (hence the reason why standard broadband routers won't work with AOL).

Its also quite expensive as for £19.95 a month you're only getting a 256kbps connection.

I am with BT Broadband (since 2001, we got a very very good deal as we were an early 'beta tester') its £25 a month for the 512kbps. Its very very very reliable. Its always on. The last time it went down was new years day and that was for about 3 minutes.

Having a router seems to imrpove reliability some what as well.
