    Was this a thing?

Were there like two tracks of rep- a thumbs up one and a thumbs down one?

I came on TSR way after this negative reps were taken away, but still, I sometimes see the odd old account with red gems.

Indeed. One user once got about 350 thumbs down on a single post

I looked it up a while ago, you used to be able to give posts a thumb down. So some users have the red gems by their name, which are like bad 'rep' gems.

Yes, if you ever see someone with red gems next to their name instead of green (very rare to see) that's why

    Why did it go away?
I think because people kept abusing it. Pretty sure it caused arguments too because you could see who gave you the negative rep.

We felt it encouraged flaming and negativity, which wasn't very welcoming to anyone, so we got rid of them some years ago now

No, I think its more of if the reps balanced out. So if someone got more downvotes than upvotes they would have red gems

I'm sure ISA made a post once that got near or just over 1000 neg reps

I don't think it has, it's just made trolls able to accumulate loads of green gems whereas with neg reps you could identify someone who was generally trollish or who made crap posts almost instantly by their red bars.

TSR thought it could be a way of bullying others....

I long for a good negging..

Maybe it we're thinking of the same post, but maybe it acquired more after I stopped looking (I was talking about an ISA post too :ninja: )
