I got sent a "Summer 2016" reading list about a week ago, but I looked up the books and they mostly appear to be textbooks. Am I expected to read these before classes start? I'm not sure if I should order them now or if they'll be sold/given to us when uni starts

Yes, that's why you're given a reading list. I don't think you're meant to read them all before lectures start though.

You need to look into terms and conditions of your university if you'll have to purchase or given them.

At my university, I don't have to buy books and I get given the books I need at the start of the year. I need to collect mine 1st week in October, doubt I'll have any books to read though.

I never read anything from the reading list UCL sent me, only used the textbooks every now and then
But it depends on your course, I'm studying a science so it may be different for law or history for example
And UCL never sold any textbooks, well my department didn't. They recommend books and you had to go out and buy them or just get them from the library

I just found it strange that it said 'summer' despite it getting sent mid-September, and I don't really understand how I'm meant to read a textbook unless I also have to take notes on it. Thanks though, I'll just order the books on Amazon

Don't order the books yet until you've started lectures because you may find you don't need them. Plus you get 6 months free Amazon Prime Trial when you start university and sign up with the academic email address

    What course are you studying?

I've ordered one because it said that it's a core text, but I'll wait until lectures start to order the rest. Oh thanks, I didn't know about that! I already have Prime but it expires in 2 months so hopefully I can get the trial then instead of renewing. I'm doing Economics & Business
