The Student Room Group

Just recieved housing offer...Max Rayne House

I just wanted to see if anyone has lived here and what they think of this place or if anyone else here will be residing here for the upcoming year.

I also want to point out what a bunch of total jackasses the student residence office people are. I sent in my housing request form in MARCH.....5 months ago. I checked off PROXIMITY TO UCL as my most important preference and I get the housing offer in the mail today for one of the farthest residences from campus out of like 25 possible choices they could have assigned me. Additionally it says the offer was made on July 19th and must be returned to UCL by August 10th....I received it today August 6th in NY. I have about NO chance of getting it back in time. I emailed them hoping they'll at least give me a chance to get it back otherwise I'm pretty screwed.

Clearly I didn't realistically expect to get the exact housing I wanted but its as if they intentionally did the exact opposite of my preference....especially considering I mailed the form in ridiculously early.

I agree that something's up with housing. I called and was told that I got a place at connaught and the deadline is august 10th. so i called today to let them know that i didn't receive it yet, only to be told that i got commonwealth.

Also i sent them emails and got no replies, if I was you, I'd call.

That's horrible...that happened to another person on here aswell...missworld i think. She was told she had connaught and then found out it was canterbury.

yeah it is. guess i just have to wait for the actual letter to find out what it really is.

That's really bad they've said one thing and then another - you should complain about that.

To the OP, definitely ring them ASAP and explain your circumstances and ask for an extension with sending the forms etc (confirming acceptance verbally). Don't leave it up to an email, its not worth it if they don't check them in time.

Yeah I'm totally planning on calling them tomorrow to both pay the deposit by credit card and talk to someone about an extension. I'm betting that like most things with any university all the really care about is the money anyway....so I figure if I immediately pay the deposit everything should be ok.

Even though Max Rayne is pretty far from campus compared to most of the other halls its out of my hands so I'm looking at it positively....several people I've talked to said they liked living there and theres a bus that goes to campus with a stop right outside. Besides Camden is pretty nice anyway.

The main thing that aggravates me is just why do they bother even asking you what your main preference is???? Why not just have a shortened housing form that just asks if you want catered or self catering and basically you get what you get and thats that....at least that would be more honest.

You'll definitely like Camden, and besides its good to familiarise, a lot of 2nd and 3rd years move there anywayz.

Yeah thats basically what I've figured now that I've been assigned there. I've been to London several times before but never lived there...but I've been to Camden and was always like "it would be cool to live here" so it should be nice.
Isn't Camden pretty rough? And isn't Camden quite far from UCL. If you chose Proximity to UCL then surely they'd try to assign you to something that's walking distance from the uni and not bus-distance. Schafer House or something that close to UCL would be appropriate if you chose proximity. I picked proximity and i hope it's walking distance from the university!
I assume you mean Camden Town considering UCL IS IN Camden :p:.

I think Camden is rough in the sense of lots of druggies rather than violent crime.

I thought UCL was in bloomsbury or euston?

Yes I mean Camden Town....although isn't UCL in Bloomsbury? Also...as far as I know regardless of what I wrote on my form, they offer you housing and you either take it or leave it....so I don't have much of a choice.

Yeah I thought Bloomsbury too.

And yup you're quite right, I believe the wording is something like "if you are not satisfied with the accommodation offered to you, we do not have to offer an alternative". So its not a strict no, but its highly unlikely they'd give you a "what's behind door number 2".
UCL is in the London region called Bloomsbury, which is in the borough of Camden (local government administration).

Camden isn't that rough. Yes, around the clubs near to Camden town, you do get people on drugs (as with many places that have nightlife in London). And yes, because people are out late at night, plastered out of their mind on alcohol or drugs - they may get attacked and mugged.

To an extent, Camden is walking distance from uni although I wouldn't normally recommend it unless you have up to an hour to kill depending on the books you have on you and how fast you walk. It's a reasonably ok cycle ride though and for the bus, when it is wet/you don't cycle/whatever - it is about 10 to 15 minutes to UCL. That said, be careful of making it for 9am lectures as buses can be crowded in the morning and they will not let people on if full.

Ring up the Residences/Accomodation Office and beat them senseless until you get something better because being riden over rough shod is harsh. Especially as I suspect they gave you a hall that is far away because thinking/knowing you are an international student - they probably thought you didn't know better.

i got john dodgson and its stated the deadline to reply is 17 aug though the offer date is 24 july.. and i just got the letter in my mail..
Yes, I mean the Camden (borough). Like Harrow school is in Harrow, even if it is in the region of Harrow on-the-Hill.
I was emphasising the point of Camden Town.

Thanks for clearing that up. I don't really understand the whole thing with boroughs and local government stuff...we don't really have the same thing in the United States for local government etc.

I regularly hear people say "isnt Camden kind of rough" but honestly I'm not too concerned...I grew up hanging around NY's Lower East Side and if anyone knows where I'm talking about that area was pretty dangerous years ago.

I'll probably end up taking the bus I found out theres a bus that stops right around Max Rayne house and also stops around the front gate of UCL so I'll deal. I like Camden Town...I just would have preferred to live closer. I just think is crap that they ask you your preference and then basically do the exact opposite.

Yes, the residence office are jackasses who don't pay any attention to what's written on your form.

Max Rayne is certainly one of the cheaper options available, so be happy. It may be that your maximum weekly price wasn't high enough to slap you in any of the residences closer to UCL. You do get the 'free bendy bus' though (also known as "that's the second ****ing number 29 that's driven past without stopping 'cause it's full, screw it, I'm walking.") The walk can take as little as 30 mins if you walk briskly, 40-45 if you walk at a gentler pace. I also don't reccommend trying to walk in with just the UCL map to assist you on your first day with very little time to spare... I ended up walking in the wrong direction, and missed one of my 'introductory lectures'.

I'd definitely reccommend trying to get hold of a bike; the ride is quick and fairly pleasant despite the smog, and most of the time you will be whizzing past buses.

Enjoy Max Rayne whatever happens. It is quite a nice place, even if you might think that the kitchen and bathroom facilities are dire at first - you'll get used to them, they're not that bad. Certainly better than some other places; for example you get a decent sized, lockable cupboard in the kitchen for all your stuff, there are two cookers in most kitchens - and they're refurbishing it all floor by floor, so you might get lucky and get a snazzy newly-done kitchen.

Yes... I called them two weeks ago, they told me where I will live so I was waiting eagerly for the letter to come and it turned out today that they didn't send it to my correspondence address but to my permanent home address where I don't live and can't check my post. I only received it today and I was to answer to 3rd of august  (I called them and they told me that I didn't lose my place, but still, it was quite stressful)
