Giving up dream gateway job for benefits

So the short version is I got an unpaid internship in a field of work I so badly want to work in that can provide a gateway into my dream job type. I told this to my Universal Credit work coach and they shot me down instantly and told me that if I took this "job" they would stop my Universal Credit but I was under the impression that Universal Credit would calculate how much you earn if you work and pay you in conjunction to that (probably not the word) so having them tell me if I take this unpaid internship they will stop my money is a massive kick in the face. I really want to take this job but I can't live on nothing. Any advice or ideas?

You would be treated as if you were earning minimum / living wage for your age, regardless of what you were actually earning.

Part of your agreement with them is that you are available for full time employment at a moments notice, if your doing an unpaid internship then this is clearly not the case.

It's best not to be entirely truthful with them.
