I think my job with Orange is pretty good for a first job. I'm learning loads of stuff and it's not just aiming the laser gun at the barcode . Whenever customers buy a new phone, there's loads of administrative things that you've gotta go through. Plus you get the opportunity to develop your sales skills (it's not as hardcore as phones 4U thank god!) and I like interacting with random customers. It's definitely challenging for a first job but I like it!

is the pay above average? ( I wont ask for specifics, could be seen as rude!)

Yeah. Summer schools are good fun, and paid fairly well for what the job actually entails (directing kids around school, attending in interactive lessons and chatting about HE).

Retail can pay quite well, ASDA has a no-age policy and pays everyone from 16 onwards at least £5.88 an hour!
I work at WHSmiths and it isn't too bad (£4.81 - not that bad for a 16 year old, plus i don't have to do that much...)

Ditto. £12.35 an hour, worked out to £250 for 2 days of doing nothing much except eating cake and going on a cruise.

18 i think because you'll be working with minors and you need to get a CRB check to say that you haven't had any past convictions and you're not on a sex offenders list somewhere.

I'm getting £5.36 an hour working as an office temp, which is more than any of my friends in shops got paid when they were 17. They all get paid around £5-£5.50 now they're 18 though, and I won't be getting paid more when I turn 18 in a few weeks.

I'm 19 and I had spent the previous 2 summers looking for a job. My first interview was with M&S. I passed the interview but when they discovered I had school they let me off. The same thing applied to Waitrose.

To the OP, the pay is £5.64 an hour but you get commission for all the expensive phones (esp the contract ones!) that you sell. But they're pretty hard to sell when you're just starting.

CarphoneWarehouse.

Basic is £4.50 p/h.

But, comission based. So depending on how much you sell you can make a mint.

Myself I lifted £103 Comisson alone (One day 9-5), without counting my £4.50 p/h! Which you can't beat at 17 part time, legally, I'm sure!
