I have always been very interested and passionate about computer science and knew i was going to a degree(s) in it and become a software/hardware engineer/computer scientist(forgive me for incorrect syntax if applicable)...

Recently i have been reflecting upon my choice and confirming that is what i want to do for the rest of my life...

I already know that is what i want to do but as i said i am just confirming so...

i am currently at the start of Y11...

I am one of the top in my class, predicted most A*'s and A's and do computing at GCSE and do many Extra curricular and also many related to computer science....
I am truly passionate about the subject and would like to study it at Cambridge...

WHAT PROGRAMMING LANGUAGES WOULD YOU RECOMMEND FOR A BUDDING STUDENT LIKE MYSELF?

    I currently know the following:

    1)HTML
    2)java script
    3)Visual basic(language?)
    4)python
    5)css?(planning on learning the basics

By no means do i mean i know these languages at an advanced levels but the general knowledge instead...

Any other advice will also be greatly appreciated...Thanks!

Whatever you want to learn tbh. Maybe C(#)? If you're interested in web design (I assume you are, judging from 3 of the entires on the list), maybe PHP? It's whatever you feel that you want to learn, really.

Firstly, for somewhere like Cambridge, they're more interested in your maths skills than how many programming languages you've learned. Learning a programming language, in the greater scheme of things, is not particularly challenging, what's much more important is logical thinking. However, I think Python is a good place to start. I would not bother with HTML or CSS because (1) they are not programming languages, (2) you will never use them unless you do web design and (3) they are very easy to learn and not a challenge at all.

If you want to do more, I guess you could do something like C or if you want to be retro, FORTRAN. You don't really need to though.

Learn python really well and become really good with it.

C# (.net), Java, Python are the most common imo
C/C++, VB, Perl, Ruby are slightly below them
Every other programming language is rather niche and no one expects knowledge let alone experience of them at entry level
