    You may want to draw a free-body of all the forces acting on the small mass.

    There are two vertical forces acting on the small mass - frictional force and weight.

     \mu_s N - mg = 0

     N is the force exerted on mass m due to M.

    Write the Newton's second law in the horizontal direction for the small mass and the combined mass (m + M) respectively, then find N.
