I was told by my chemistry teacher that you should put hot food into the fridge and not let it cool down first. Is this right? For instance you have made pasta and chicken or something and there are leftovers.

no...itll make your fridge all hot. I let things cool.
You should let it cool first otherwise the heat from it as it cools *in* the fridge will stop the fridge from staying below 5 degrees C and will allow the chance for bacteria to grow in ALL the food in the fridge.

I was told you should cool food by putting it under running water (obviously in a container, so the food doesn't get all soggy) or something and only put it in the fridge when it is cool.

Ok Pencil Queen! My teacher told me the opposite! That you should not let it cool outside because bacteria can grow! Should you cover the hot food with cling film as it cools outside or without and then put in on when placing it in the fridge?

How do you have neg rep already? Oh and it seems your teacher is a liar, supposing that PQ is right that is.

Don't cover it with clingfilm - it'll get all steamy and soggy...but cover it over with a plate or something to keep any insects off.

You don't have to wait until it's ice cold to put it in but at least until it's body temperature or below (body temperature is when any bacteria will start to go nuts and growing so if you bung it in then so it cools below body temperature as quickly as possible then that's the best option).

Yeah bring out the bunsen burner! LOL
Your chem teacher is right without details.
You need to lower your fridge temp to 3 or 2 to keep the temp acceptable
