    A perfectly reasonable theory, but it doesn't really account for the existence of the Republicans and the Democrats in the United States...

    That's mainly antiquated reasoning like the Conservatives being referred to as the Tories. It comes from the split of the Democratic-Republican party into the pro Jackson Democratic Party and the anti-Jackson National Republican Party.

    First of all because capitalists are also a class in addition to being a political identity. Socialists and communists are only political or ideological labels.

    Second of all because "capitalist" unlike socialist and communist was not a word "capitalists" used for themselves. They were usually liberals or conservatives. It's a term invented by the opponents of liberalism and conservatism to refer to their political adversaries.
