I think its both, they are decorative and highly trained (how hard must be be to stand there without moving a muscle for eight hours at a time)

They are a line of defence for the buckingham palae more than the queen as how often si the queen in residence there?

Who's in there that I wouldn't know about? :p: You mean security wise - I can imagine the kinds of people they'd have in there :p:

And you know what I mean, if a terrorist decided to parachute into the Palace or got in somehow.

Though I've heard they have snipers on the roof of the Palace so they'd get shot down

throw their hats at the terrorist?

if they're standing there all day I'd think they'd be too tired to do anything in an emergency - they should get chairs to guard from.

I bet they don't just do that, i bet they look through their snipers at people. especially on hot days when people aren't wearing a lot.

It'd be alright during the summer though, they could use the scope on their sniper rifle to perv on the girls wearing their skimpy tops.

EDIT - Great minds think alike, Thud.

Damn you! You've reminded me of a particularly potent childhood memory. It makes me remember my favourite poem when I was small (When We Were Young - A.A.Milne):

They're changing guard at Buckingham Palace -
Christopher Robin went down with Alice.
They've great big parties inside the grounds.
"I wouldn't be king for a hundred pounds,"
Says Alice.

The Rest of it, if you like

The Queen allows the guards to get their hair cut in the summer because of the heat in London. A candid pic...
