UTIs - how much is too much?

Hi guys,

Absolutely horrible topic but I think I have cystitus or something but I've just passed loads of blood in my urine and I don't know what to do! I can't decide how serious this is as I'm a real worry wart/hypochondriac.

I can't get to a doctors until thursday next week, I'm in loads of pain and I'm a little worried, to be honest.

Advice, anyone?

If you're passing a lot of blood I'd say you need to get to a doctor straight away - if you can't get an appointment until next week, go to A&E or something, particularly if you're in pain.
I'd go see your emergency doctor then or book into the nearest available time slot at a different clinic as a visting patient. Mostly because passing alot of blood means that you either have very bad cystitis or possibly (highly unlikely) something worse, not necessarily cancer either before you panic.

Whatever happens, if it's just cystitis, you still need urgent treatment.

I suffer from recurrent kidney infections and believe me, you don´t want that.

Surely you can find a way to get to the doctors before next thursday? I´ve had that once and it scared the **** out of me. Turned out to be nothing too serious but i still needed treatment.

Passing blood in urine / stools / vomit is NEVER a good sign. Especially when it's painful.

You say you can't go to the doctor before next Thursday. Is this because they don't have appointments, or because you're busy?

If it's the former, doctors ALWAYS have emergency appointments. Phone up at 9.30 in the morning and book one there and then (you don't have to say why, but it may help your case if they seem reluctant (Receptionists - like your doctor are sworn to confidentiality about patients) )

If it's the latter. Just cancel something / put it back. NOTHING is more important than your health. Simply, if you're not halthy, you're going to miss out on a heck of a lot.

Hope this helps!

My mother had cystitis this time last year, and left it for about a week. Eventually it got so bad that she had to be taken to hospital and had kidney damage. Don't leave it.

If you have passed blood, having stinging or something and really really can't see your GP for a week (why the hell not, they ALL have emergency slots availabl on the day or 48 hours in advance. I know damn well they do)
then go to your local A&E.

If you have no symptoms and instead passed some slightly reddish coloured urine, then see if it happens again...
Drink LOTS and LOTS of water. Don't stop, coz this does really help relieve pain. Not that I've experienced what you're going through right now, but I have had a bladder infection before and I can TELL you, water does help.

If you don't drink up, you're setting yourself up for some agony
