I've been out of studies for four years and I have not gained any relevant experience in the time, but this year I have decided to return to academia and have begun studying a STEM course at a reputable university in London. I'd like to know whether the four-year void in anything relevant would hinder my chances at obtaining an internship or any insight programmes in banking, let alone a career. Cheers.

Depend on your other attributes like your work experience and what you do outside work/school like sports or volunteering. Also, you need a good knowledge of the industry and be personable and interesting.

Don't think they'll care really. Just build up from where you are now, and go for it.

KCL is a semi-target university so you can do banking if you're good enough. Join the Imvestment banking society, do extracurricular sports, volunteering etc...
Maybe try and secure some sort of financial work experience as well. Cold call/email small firms for work experience.
