cancer melanoma (quite disgusting)

I had a mole on my arm and 4 years ago I scratched it off, it grew back a bit again so I kept scratching every time it tried to come back, anyway I now have like a bruise scar there now, not noticable and im glad I did it but there is a hair there and im just worried I will get cancer because of what Ive done. I thought I kept seeing something black (cancer) but its just the hair root.

The thing is if Id have say fell off my bike and scraped my arm badly its only like the same thing, and you can't get cancer from scraping your arm right?

If you think its a cancerous melanoma go to the doctor NOW.

I don't think it is, as its been like this for 2 years now and im ok, but can it turn into cancer in the future is what I want to know, is the fact that Ive scratched it off and there is now a small hair there putting me at high risk?

I've done exactly the same thing, just got a skin-coloured spot now (but unlike acne, it never changes size and never goes away).

I think you may have misunderstood how cancer works, scratching a normal mole does not create cancer. At all.

I think I know what you're talking about. I have one just below the corner of my lip. What's the medical term?

Trauma to a mole doesn't cause a cancerous change so there's no need to worry. Wouldn't scratch moles off in future though, they can bleed really badly and sometimes get infected.

Dude go to the doc, Please. Moles can be very funny - I went to the docs about something completely unrelated (smear test!) and she spotted what to me was just another mole on my forearm. It was raised ans had blackish specks in it, and she made me an appointment to have it cut out THAT AFTERNOON!

Just go and ask, melanomas are agressive and spead very quickly. Best to be safe than sorry, especially in this instance.

The fact it has a hair in it diesnt mean its cancerous.

I was told that the reason you shouldnt pull hairs out of moles is because it can damage the cells or somthing and then if they become damaged it can then cause cancer if theyve already got cancerous cells in them.....or something.....i realy dont know! its something along those lines but i really cant remember so smeone correct me!

But...my point is the hair doesnt mean you have cancer.

I think youre incredibly stupid though scratching a mole off! If it was bothering you why didnt you just go to the docs to get it removed?!

I was embarrased and getting it removed properly would have left a bigger scar than I have now.

Reply 10

why be embarassed about a mole? It would have been a lot safer and saved you this worry now!

Reply 11

I don't know but Ive always been embarrased about them, I didn't tell my parents or anyone for some strange reason I just don't like mentioning them. Other than this im a totally normal guy lol!

There's nothing embarrassing about a mole. It took me a while to pluck up the courage to tell my mum I have a dodgy looking mole on my breast but that was because I was scared of going to the doctors. I went to the doctors yesterday but apparently all my moles are fine. It's always better to just get them checked out if you are worried. This has totally put my mind at rest.

I have a fairly large mole on my chest. That hurts when you prod it.
Its like having a 3rd nipple actually. I cant be arsed to go to the Dr's either.

Are you sure? My bf had a mole removed and the scar is just the same size as the mole was...

my understanding is that it probably is more likely to turn into melanoma because you kept scratching it off. But if it did, then you'll notice changes, so just keep an eye on it. And perhaps keep it covered from the sun. You don't need to go to your doctor about it unless it changes in shape/texture etc- the usual warning signs.

im not a doctor but i dont think you can get cancer for scratching it off, but theres a possibility it was a sign of cancer in the 1st place. HOPEFULLY it isnt but i would goto the doc to check it out anyway, and dont be afraid to say u scratched it off. doctors deal with weirder ppl everyday. and even if you dont have cancer (i hope you dont) they wont mind to have checked it out for you - it's their job

I'm curious, how would scratching it off encourage your skin cells to freak out and become cancerous?

it means cells multiply over and over so it's more likely that an error will occur in the repair process... and it's these errors in the DNA (of anti cancer proteins or just the 'make more cells' proteins) that cause cancer. The DNA can also be damaged by other stuff like UV light, viruses etc..

So I figure- keep scratching and UV light = bad.

Though Muse is more of a medic than me so you should probably all listen to him

I see, I also heard the same thing about bruising.

The risks increase, but it's minimal i'm sure.

Either way, OP - get it removed for free.
