For many units with any physics or combined physics degree, the units say they assess student with written, coursework and practical, and I was wondering what the coursework would be like, as such what form would it be in, how would the coursework be marked and what would he coursework be?

You need to ask the universities directly about this. They might not be able to give you specific answers but it will vary hugely between universities.
